In order to further expand the academic vision and stimulate scientific innovation of graduate students, Professor Chenghang Sun from Department of Microbial Chemistry in IMB was jointly invited by Department of Education and Graduate Student Council, IMB to give a retrospective report on scientific expedition of special ecosystem in and out of China.

For more than ten years. Prof. Sun focused on discovery of new antibiotics and exploration of pharmaceutical actinomycetes from extreme environments such as mangroves along coast of Guangxi and Guangdong in the southeast of China; Taklamagan Desert in Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, the northwest of China; and Karst caves distributed in the southwest of China, etc.

At the meeting, Prof. Sun shared his experiences on sampling from all those different ecosystem and research examples of new strains and new antibiotics discovered from the collected samples under hard work with his graduate students. His vivid explanations and various pictures taken during expedition aroused the interest of the audience. This report enabled graduate students to have a clearer and deeper understanding of the importance of sampling work in special environments to discover new strains and new antibiotics, and stimulate the students' spirit of exploring the unknowns, actively seeking knowledge, and fearless of danger and difficulty, being brave in innovation.
